Let’s Sing 2025 has us warming up our vocal cords for a great weekend of karaoke here at What’s It Like, and it turns out we aren’t alone with Let’s Sing 2025 publisher PLAION releasing some surprising karaoke data about Australian and New Zealand citizens.
New research commissioned to celebrate the launch of Let’s Sing 2025 has shone a (spot)light on how integral karaoke is to our social experience, with over 70% of Gen z’s and millennials looking forward to doing karaoke this summer with friends. Even if 17% are having to fight for their turn, from their spotlight (and microphone) stealing siblings!
The research questioned 1,000 people across Australia and New Zealand on their karaoke habits and found:
- Karaoke isn’t just an activity for fun:
- 56% participate in karaoke for casual fun
- 77% found karaoke improves their mood or overall mental wellbeing,
- 20% say karaoke has made a difference to their confidence when speaking or singing in front of a crowd.
- Pop was the top genre, with 41% saying it was their favourite genre at karaoke – especially for Gen Z with over half (59%) opting for pop tracks! While 40% of men prefer rock tracks.
- It seems the cost-of-living pressures are seeping into the region’s social plans, with 71% considering doing karaoke with an at-home set-up.
- The at-home set-up is a familiar concept with gen z’s (66%) and millennial’s (64%) admitting they’ve tried at-home karaoke games before.
- 1-in-4 would choose Ed Sheeran when it’s their turn to pick up the mic!
- Almost 1-in-10 would pick, the Aussie dynamic duo, The Veronica’s at karaoke!
- Hope your boss hasn’t booked karaoke for the office party as only 5% want to karaoke with colleagues, overwhelmingly friends (67%) are the preferred karaoke group.
